Blue Peter at the Conservation Centre

Just a quick note today to say that our sauropod will be featured on Blue Peter today! That’s right, the Niger Sauropod will finally get the fame it deserves. Blue Peter presenter and action woman Helen Skelton will be talking to our very own fossil preparator extraordinaire Mark Graham and NHM palaeontologist / dinosaur expert Paul Barret. She’ll also help remove the plaster jacket from one of the femurs, the two largest bones in the dinosaur’s skeleton. Don’t miss it!

Blue Peter is on at 5.30 PM on CBBC (Freeview channel 70, Sky channel 613, Virgin channel 701).

Kieran Miles is the proud owner of a Blue Peter badge.

From Methods: Healthy (n 37) community-dwelling peolpe aged 65 years and older were recruited from the Palmerston North (New Zealand) area, to participate in a 20-week randomised crossover study. Screening for the study occurred by telephone and/or personal interviews, including a general health screening questionnaire. Exclusion criteria consisted of the following: diagnosis of any form of cancer, vascular disease, diabetes mellitus, or mental illness; major CVD; hepatitis; endocrine disease or inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis; anaemia; malnutrition from malabsorption (vitamins B12 and B6, folate, Fe); renal impairment; compromised immune status (AIDS, multiple myeloma, chronic lymphatic leukaemias). Also excluded were smokers, and those who regularly consumed more than two units of alcohol per day, vitamin supplements, anti-inflammatory drugs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ibuprofen, cyclo-oxygenase 2 inhibitors), tranquillizers, anti-depressants or anticonvulsants. Subjects were required to have a BMI of between 18 and 30 kg/m2, and to undergo a health screening including kidney and liver function, and haematology (blood glucose and complete blood count; Medlab Central). the fact that they could come up wiht 37 individuals fitting these criteria in the city of Palmerston North is very impressive. One wishes they had higher numbers to make the stats more impressive, but guess the population size put the limit there

I dream of a world with everyone hanivg an electronical device provided by the government that would replace everything we have now in our pockets. It would replace credit cards and money. This kind of system is already working in Europe. It would also be used as a smartphone. Everything would be related to this, including your official online account. We could even vote with this kind of device. Making an association of google accounts with individuals via the government is a great idea and a step forward a "centralized" future where we would only need a single device to identify ourselves to do everything. The possibilities are endless.
